Hugo Nomination

Nexxus Short Story Gets Hugo Nod

April 15, 2003 -- John L. Flynn's short story "A Gift of Verse," has been nominated for a Hugo Award as one of the top five best science fiction short stories of the year, and John himself has been nominated for a Hugo in the Best Fan Writer category. This is the first time in the two-year history of Nexxus: The Speculative and Science Fiction Online Literary Magazine of the 21st Century that one of its published stories has been nominated for a Hugo. Dr. Flynn, 48, is a college professor and administrator at Towson University in Towson, Maryland, and teaches one of the few university courses on science fiction writing in the country; in fact, a number of his students have gone onto become science fiction writers themselves. He is also a member of the Science Fiction Writers of America, and he has written six books, a number of short stories, articles, columns, reviews, and essays. He has been involved in science fiction fandom since 1973, when he attended his first convention in New York City, and he has been active as a fan, a dealer, a costumer, and a writer ever since. He opened one of the first science fiction/comic bookstores in the Baltimore area in 1980, and as a former Master costumer, he was a founding member of the Costumer's Guild. In 1997, John switched gears from writing and costuming to study psychology, and earned a degree as a clinical psychologist. His study, The Etiology of Sexual Addiction: Childhood Trauma as a Primary Determinant, has broken new ground in the diagnosis and treatment of sexual addiction. As a teacher and mentor, he works closely with many new writers, and actively promotes L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest. Today, John is a regular attendee at Worldcon, and often speaks on panels about the state of the art of science fiction films. Richmond Wilson, the editor of Nexxus, is very proud to have published John's story, and calls him "a very decent man and a heck of a nice guy who has worked hard on behalf of the world science fiction community to bring sf into the mainstream." (Editor's Note: John Flynn's story did not win the Hugo Award for the Best Science Fiction Short Story of the year, but we all feel that it was very good, and deserved the award. John is a terrific writer, and his work will appear again on the top of everyone's lists.--RMW
